Question by ATWolf: Would a Old Western-style picture be a good gift idea for Chinese preteens/teens?
Long story short, I worked in a summer camp for young Chinese students last summer. This summer, I’ve made plans to visit some of these kids again and then I’ll go to another city to work with more kids. Yay! 
However, I’m trying to find good, unique “American” gifts for the group of kids that I worked with last year in China, and for the different group of kids I’ll work with again this summer. Buying things from the store is proving rather difficult since nearly everything is made in China.
When I brought some photos from my hometown, I noticed that the last year’s group of kids asked to keep the pictures that had me in it, so I had been meaning to take a self-photo and make copies of that to give to the all the kids I worked with with. Well, it happened that I went to Six Flags yesterday and had one of those speciality photos made with a couple friends– the ones where you dress up in period-era clothes and they take black-and-white pictures of you. We chose an Old Western theme.
Now, here’s the wrinkle. My friends dressed up in those saloon girl dresses; however, only their arms were bare. Their shoulders were covered by their hair and feather boas. My sister and I agree that it doesn’t look risque at all. I dressed in a male cowboy’s outfit. We held guns and pointed them toward the camera. However, these details are still making me wonder if it’d be appropriate culturally for the Chinese. On one hand, the Old West! America! Cool costumes! on the other hand…. hookers and guns and alcohol…
Your thoughts? Any input from native Chinese would be extremely helpful. (And yes, I’ve also been thinking about American food as gifts… however I’d have to take it in my carryon as I don’t plan to check any luggage… not sure how it would go through with the TSA and I don’t want to risk having them confiscate my only gifts…)

my boyfriend friend is going to have a baby and i dont know her very well so i dont know what to give her. this is also my first baby shower and i would like to get her something she is going to need alot of . she is having a baby girl and i would like to get her something she would like since i am still trying to get to know her i dont want to insult her with the wrong gift. any ideas would really help me . i was also thinking of getting a chinese dress but i cant find any that will fit a baby.

Check her registry- try Target, Walmart, or Babies R Us. If she’s not registered, you can get her diapers, wipes, onesies, undershirts, or a gift card. I wouldn’t get anything as specific as a dress- she probably would appreciate a practical gift much more, especially since you don’t know her well.

…that men seem to like so much? i mean yeah they´re cute and all. But mom had a formal party two days ago and one of the yong girls was wearing a traditional silk dress (golden) She isn´t even chinese so it looked fake to me, but every man on my family is commenting on how great she looked. (see comments like she´s hot¨is one thing. But comments are more like ¨that dress was very elegant she looked like a classy lady. loved that dress..) It sounds a bit gay. I dunno.. But I have never met a Chinese person I would consider “traditional” in either the Western or Local Sense. I have never met a man that does not have mistresses, I have never met a chased girl, unless that’s the tradition. What does traditional refer to to you? Is it just something you say for the sake of saying it? Doesn’t it seem that if Chinese were really traditional, they’d wear traditional dress etc… ? What’s traditional about hammering pints at the karaoke bar, or cheating on your taxes?

Westerners may use the term referring to cultures they know jack-s**t about, thinking folks in that culture are all stuck in another century, because “stereotypes” and poor education prevail ….on this side of the globe.

I met this chinese girl in a health club. she works in sales deptarment there. she was acting bit funny with me, i thought she probably want me to become a member. after chatting with her for like 30 mins, i did signed the trial membership and I also took her number and her personal email address.
After a while we started chatting on MSN, she also invited me to one of her club members party. before going to the party, she even messaged me to ask, what should she wear. and also suggested me to dress smartly…after I had reached the pub, she got be introduced to all of the members and had also kissed me on my cheek, after getting few drinks, she started asking about my family and work and stuff. and than she suddenly said would u be my brother, I really like company and will hang out with you.
there all this fuck thing happened, things were moving smoothely for me and this thing fucked everythign. even after all this thing, she finally said, oh u r so handsome and u not at all sound like INDIAN… and I love these thinga in yu

I seen a lot of these Asian college girls who dress and act like little girls. With pony tails and little dresses. They look like little anime girl characters or Asian dolls. They like to play video games and carry a crap load of gadgets that look like they are for little kids. They wear stuff with cartoon characters and when they talk they all giggle like 10 year olds.
What’s up is Asian society doing this to them?
